Clair Brothers Powers First Concert in Notre Dame Stadium
The moment Garth Brooks made his appearance in front of 84,000 fans at the sold-out, first ever concert at Notre Dame stadium, there was no doubt something historic was in the air – that and a whole lot of cold rain, wind and even a little snow. In fact, the high winds were strong enough that the production team had to coordinate with local and university meteorologists to evaluate and maintain the safety of the staging. Dan Heins, FOH engineer for Garth since 1989, described it, “By four o’clock in the afternoon, just hours before the show, we still didn’t know if the concert would go on. We ended up doing soundcheck with the PA on the ground. The wind finally let up, so we were able to raise the speakers. Thankfully, after all the weather drama, Garth’s show went on to become something for the ages.”
Though the show was delayed by an hour, nobody cared once the sound of Garth’s latest hit, “All Day Long,” radiated through Garth’s exclusive Clair Brothers PA. After the song Garth Said, “Hello, Notre Dame! We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. How y’all doing?” Thunderous applause amid tens of thousands of unadulterated screams more than answered his question.
Part of the show’s magic was the star-shaped stage with a 360-degree rotating centre stage on which Brooks and his band performed – a theatre-in-the-round concept where Garth moves freestyle around the periphery playing to each side of the stadium. While playing one of his greatest hits, “The River,” the audience sang along with the chorus, setting an entrancing mood throughout the stadium. Cameras rolled as the multitude’s massive singular voice was recorded – a recording that will be mixed in as part of the TV special, Garth: Live at Notre Dame! – to be aired nationally on Sunday, December 2nd on CBS at 8:00 pm EST. “After this show sold out, I thought it could not get any more exciting than this,” Brooks said. “Then, CBS calls and in an instant, the show becomes bigger. This changes everything!”
Garth recently announced his plans for a three-year stadium tour starting in early 2019. The confidence he has in playing such huge venues is born from his record-breaking, recently completed three-year arena tour that sold over 6.3 million tickets, often in multi-night, multi-show runs per city. The plans for the stadium tour sound system are simply augmentations and adaptations from the successful sound design from the arena tour. According to Dan, “The Clair Brothers PA consistently sounds great, year after year. And I can say the same thing about Garth. He pushes himself to deliver his best every time he performs.”
The fundamental core of the stadium rig is the Clair Brothers i218 line array system that has been increased in size to cover stadiums in-the-round. The Notre Dame concert used a total of 96 i218 array cabinets and 48 i212 cabinets in the main array hangs, all eight hangs with identical equipment. The layout for the stadium effectively utilised two different array hang configurations depending on whether the array was facing the sideline or the end zone. Josh Sadd, sound designer for the tour, said, “The Notre Dame stadium, while obviously great for football, has a bright future for concerts. The rake of the seating is very amphitheatre-like which is acoustically very musical sounding – a great feature!”
The P.A. People Prescribe BOSE for Sydney Kings
After almost 25 years Sydney’s The P.A. People have returned to their rental roots, purchasing a Bose ShowMatch Delta-Q array loudspeaker system for their Event Communications department.
“We have been looking for the right opportunity and the right product for quite some time - I first heard the ShowMatch system two and a half years ago before its release and I was impressed. Since then there has been critical acclaim at the product launch in Australia and some great reviews of the product in use. We felt that the form factor was appropriate - and the tonality of the system suited most client’s needs, and for a small system it does get loud without losing control. We had used a demo rig on a show earlier in the year, and we recently installed a small system at Riverside Stables. We were again impressed at what we heard,” said Chris Dodds managing director of The P.A. People.
“A few weeks ago, we were asked if we would like to bid for the provision of Audio and Comms supporting the Sydney Kings home games at Qudos Bank Arena, and it seemed like a great opportunity to invest in a speaker system to support our communications system offer.” Chris continued.
The ShowMatch system is unique in array technology, in that it combines the best of both traditional line array design with the benefits of a constant curvature system in the near field.
“We rigged the system for the first time on the Monday and then spent a couple of days rehearsing with the system. The rig for the Kings in Qudos Bank Arena consists of six arrays, each comprising eight ShowMatch cabinets and a cardioid bass array of three 18” SMS118 subcabinets. Each pair of main arrays uses a different combination of SM5, SM10 and SM20 cabinets to achieve the appropriate vertical dispersion.” Waveguides are available to tailor the horizontal dispersion from 55 to 120 degrees. “We have then selected 100-degree waveguides for the SM5 and SM10 cabs, and 120-degree guides for the SM20’s. That way we are able to match the dispersion of each cluster to the requirements of the venue in both vertical and horizontal planes” commented Anatole Day, system engineer for the initial arena install. “We also added four SM20 cabs on the lower ring of the gondola to help bring the image down closer to the action for the court side ticket holders” he added.
The P.A. People have opted for an entirely Dante based signal distribution system for the Kings. The system is in and out of the Arena on a regular basis so being able to connect a single cable for signal distribution is great. The system is based on a Yamaha QL console and a pair of RIO1608 boxes to collect and distribute the audio from the system engineering location, the video replay systems, the OB trucks, and the PA itself.
The system for the Sydney Kings is rounded out with a comprehensive Clear-Com Communications system centred around a Delta matrix frame, V-Station matrix panels, Helixnet digital partyline beltpacs and an integrated FreeSpeak II wireless solution. “The Comms system is fantastic” said Matt Byles, Technical Director for Great Big Events. “Having the Freespeak system fully integrated with the Matrix panels and the partyline provides us with a level of functionality we haven’t achieved before at the Kings, and the wireless coverage is fantastic in a venue where many other suppliers have failed.”
“It is almost twenty-five years since we left the large-scale Audio market with the sale of our iconic Turbosound TMS-3 rig in 1995, but it is great to be back in the space with a new market leading sound system. We look forward to letting our customers hear what it can deliver for them” Chris concluded.

Large Elation Lighting System for Polsat Esports Studio
Polish design and installation company ARAM has outfitted a new Esports studio in Poland with a flexible, state-of-the-art Elation lighting system. The studio, at Polsat television in Warsaw, is equipped with the latest in studio-optimised LED luminaires designed to provide players and viewers with the best Esports experience, whether watching the event on TV, online or in person.
The custom Elation lighting solution includes everything from dynamic white-light LED array panels and high-quality white light ellipsoidal spots to full-colour batten, par and LED moving head luminaires that deliver a wider spectrum of chromatic and effect options. Incorporated in the rig are some of Elation’s newest luminaires, including Artiste series LED moving heads.
As one of the few technical production companies specialised in Esports, ARAM has stood behind the design and technical production of some of the largest Esports shows in the world, experience that has given them unique insight into how an Esports project should be tailored and delivered. “Esports is an industry with a particular set of needs and requires different show formatting,” stated ARAM co-owner Rafał Mrzygłocki. “Although the type of lighting required is generally the same as any other television studio – generally high quality white light – player lighting was also a factor to consider, meaning we had to be careful not to obstruct the players’ vision or interfere with their communication. As for the audience, they must be able to enjoy the action inside the game.”
The Polsat studio was completed in July as the first broadcast-owned esports studio in the country. The flexible space allows for different configurations, for example news desks can move in and out so the studio can be used according to needs. The alternating designs play to the Elation lighting system’s strength as the intelligent lights adjust accordingly. “Mostly the space is lit as a traditional studio but sometimes there are special looks like an opening cue for instance, when a match completes and at other times,” commented Rafal, who noted that another important requirement was for all the lighting to be LED based so as not to overheat the players.
“Elation has launched more interesting products over the past few years and we’ve also noticed they have been on more and more top productions,” continues Rafal, who added that he has used Elation on ESL One series Esports shows in the past and other projects. “The quality is excellent and the products are well designed. Overall, it is excellent value for money.”
With the development of dedicated esports studios key for the development of the sport, the Polsat facility has been a welcome addition to the genre. “We see a big demand for permanent installations of Esports studios. Polsat Esports studio is a second permanent studio we have provided and I believe not the last,” Rafal concluded.
Texas Live! Drafts L-Acoustics
They say everything in Texas is big, and the new 200,000 sq ft Texas Live! entertainment complex certainly fits that bill with its ample array of dining, live music, and other entertainment options—and, next year, the first Live! by Loews boutique hotel. Backed by the Texas Rangers and City of Arlington, among others, the vast $250M complex recently celebrated its grand opening, an event heard loud and clear via Kara and Kiva II systems in two of its primary performance spaces networked via AVB and processed by the Lone Star State’s very first installed P1 digital audio processor.
The performance venues include a 5,000-capacity outdoor event pavilion known as Arlington Backyard, and the Live! Arena, a 35,000-square-foot, two-level concert and festival space featuring a gourmet burger restaurant owned by Dallas Cowboys icon Troy Aikman. Both venues now sport L-Acoustics systems specified and designed by Las Vegas-based consultant Coherent Design, and installed and integrated by AVI Systems’ Dallas team.
“When looking to equip these two venues with the best possible quality sound reinforcement, we felt that L-Acoustics gave us the biggest bang for the buck,” said Dan Defendorf at Baltimore-based Cordish/ECI, which owns and operates Texas Live!, among other sports and entertainment destinations around the country. “Texas Live! hosts a lot of national touring artists, and L-Acoustics satisfies them all when it comes to rider requests, which was an important factor in the decision. Plus, the Kara and Kiva II systems are delivering ideal coverage in their respective venues and sound absolutely phenomenal. We made the right choice!”
Arlington Backyard’s system comprises 24 Kara enclosures split between two hangs on either side of the stage, each backed by five flown SB18m subs. Additionally, four coaxial X12 enclosures serve as side fills, while six X8 are used as front fill. Everything is powered by 11 LA4X amplified controllers.
“Our main reason for choosing the Kara system in Arlington Backyard, our main concert venue, was popular demand,” confirmed Texas Live! Entertainment Director and Chief Engineer Michael Roberts. “We wanted to make our artists happy and provide an unforgettable experience for our guests. No one complains or asks for anything else when I respond with our venue specs.”
Live! Arena, described as the ‘living room’ of Texas Live!, is home to 16 ultra-compact Kiva II enclosures flown eight per side with three SB15 subs atop each hang. These are buttressed by four ground-stacked KS28 subs in end-fire mode, plus eight X8 as fills, all powered by three LA12X and two LA4X amplified controllers.
“I’m extremely surprised and delighted with the output of the Kiva II system,” Michael added. “They are also very versatile; diction from TV audio is amazingly clear in such a reflective space. We struggle with this at similar venues around the country. Dan Palmer (Business Development Manager, Sports Facilities – USA and Canada) at L-Acoustics was extremely helpful in answering all of our questions, and his hospitality during our visit to the main office was first-class.”
Furthermore, both venues also utilise L-Acoustics’ new AVB-compliant P1 networked digital audio processor, which combines an EQ station with delay and dynamics processing, and a multi-mic acoustic measurement platform with offline delay finder and EQ modelisation.
Each venue had its own design challenges, including harmonious integration with a 100-foot LED screen. “The Live! Arena has one wall that’s entirely glass, and the owner specifically wanted to install an LED screen that’s as big as possible,” explained Jason Pritchard, senior design engineer for Coherent Design. “That set up two distinct challenges: keep the sound off the glass wall to avoid reflections while keeping the direct sound on the audience; and having speakers that were small enough to not interfere with the sightlines for the LED wall, but were also powerful enough to fill the room clearly and without distortion. The Kiva II speakers solved both of those issues: they’re quite compact but have plenty of power, and the DSP allowed us to refine the arrays’ performance with the precision needed to keep the energy off the glass on the dancefloor.”
For Arlington Backyard, the Kara speakers put plenty of energy into the room and fulfilled another stipulation by the owners, who wanted a rider-friendly brand in the house to minimise the amount of system movement as different artists passed through. However, the designers also had to be wary of LFE control. The new Live! by Loews boutique hotel would be built along one of the venue’s walls, and noise containment from the venue with respect to the hotel property was a priority. That was managed by arranging the ten SB18m subs in a custom cardioid array. “It really does confine the energy without diminishing the impact in the venue,” he said.
Biamp Tesira DSP serves as the campus-wide network backbone, which includes LA12X and LA4X networked using AVB protocol throughout the eight venues that comprise Texas Live! “The LA amps worked perfectly right out of the box,” Jason said. That was echoed by John Van Stipdonk, engineering supervisor at AVI Systems, who noted that the inclusion of the P1 processor in the sound system vastly simplified achieving the sound and pattern control that they wanted. “With the P1 acting as a bridge between the amplified controllers, it does most of the processing work and lets the amps very efficiently focus on the task of delivering power rather than also having to provide EQ and other DSP.”
Van Stipdonk also points out that the interoperability between the LA12X, LA4X, P1, and Biamp Tesira allows music performed at either of the venues to also be routed to any of the other seven locations in Texas Live!, as well as to the plaza surrounding it. “If you have to go anywhere else in the complex—to another bar or restaurant to get your favourite whiskey, for example—you can still hear the show from the Backyard or the Arena pumped through any of those sound systems,” he said. “And the L-Acoustics systems plugged seamlessly into the AVB network—it took all of five seconds to route it and lock it. This is a big place, but between L-Acoustics and AVB, we got it covered.”
Daktronics Installs Wisconsin’s Largest High School Football Field Video Display
Wisconsin’s largest high school video display is now homed at Muskego High’s field. Designed and manufactured by Daktronics the display measures 17 feet high by 30 feet wide. “We wanted the best and are so happy with this community project,” said Ryan McMillen, Muskego’s athletic and activities director. “We did it right and have no regrets. Alums walk in and say they’re proud to be Warriors.”
A scorer’s table joins Muskego’s fleet this fall, acting as another digital solution. With the revenue the outdoor display raised, the school opted to add the additional display inside the school. The table measures three feet high by 19 feet wide and features 6mm line spacing.
“We had some extra funding available from the outdoor display, so we ordered the table. We will have two revenue streams with our indoor and outdoor displays,” Ryan continued. “They’re aesthetically appealing, part of our curriculum and impact students’ college and career readiness. It’s about more than just sports.”
Chris Kretsch, Daktronics regional sales representative, echoed Ryan's thoughts on the important role of media education in schools. “Video displays have become more so an educational tool rather than just a scoring solution. They are essentially an advertising medium operated by students that are able to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s exciting to be a part of as schools build new relationships within the business community.”

FOX Sports’ College Football Pre-Game Show uses Clear-Com for Flexible Wireless Communications
Soundtronics Wireless of Las Vegas, NV relied on Clear-Com to service long-time client, FOX Sports, with an Eclipse HX digital matrix and FreeSpeak II digital wireless intercom system for the network’s college football pre-game show, broadcast live from Fair Park (State Fair of Texas) on October 6.
Soundtronics has been the RF vendor serving FOX Sports for several years, handling the NFL Sunday desk show when on the road, as well as championship games, Super Bowl LII and Veteran’s Day specials.
“FreeSpeak II is one of the primary reasons we have this agreement with FOX Sports,” said Jason Waufle, Partner, Soundtronics Wireless. “It is just so far ahead of the system they were previously using. You get reliability and quality with a large number of channels, and it just works.”
Soundtronics received a call three weeks before the game to join FOX Sports in Texas. “Three weeks is pretty standard, especially with our great relationship with FOX Sports. They know what we can do and how quickly we can turn projects around,” said Jason. “We used our comms plan for this year’s Veteran’s Day special as a template. Our knowledge and understanding of how FOX Sports does these shows is a big plus to be able to use a nearly identical package with some modifications.”
For the college football pre-game show, mics and IFBs were very important as producers wanted the show to be interactive, with talent and RF cameras moving as far as 35 yards away from the main set. That meant that communications needed to be as unobtrusive as possible for everyone.
At the heart of the Soundtronics communications system was a Clear-Com Eclipse HX Omega frame with two wireless controller interface cards for FreeSpeak II connectivity, two 16-port analogue interface cards adding 16-ports of audio and data per card, a 64-channel duplex Dante interface card and a 64-channel duplex MADI interface card in the frame.
The wide roaming capability of FreeSpeak II was invaluable to enable a flexible production. “We pushed our FreeSpeak II 1.9 GHz system to its maximum with 25 wireless belt-packs, supported by three transceiver splitters with five transceivers each, plus five more transceivers for a total of 20,” said Jason. “Plus, we used the fourth FreeSpeak II frame slot for an antenna card via fibre 300 yards away for a remote hit. Fibre is everywhere these days, and we are really grateful to FOX Sports utilities for running that line, as it would be pushing the limits of Cat 5 cable. Even the Dante cables to the truck were all fibre.”
The biggest challenge faced by Jason and all those using RF was the number of frequencies that would be used for the event, with both FOX Sports and ESPN, the stadium itself and a music stage all closely located. In total, over 400 RF frequencies were coordinated, including 200 that Jason and his crew would have to work around, plus their own kit and set-up.
“This was probably the best performing show I’ve ever done, and a lot of that is because of the Clear-Com equipment we were using,” said Jason. “It performed flawlessly, and that’s what you want for your clients — not one hiccup or a single complaint.
“Fair Park was a great environment to push FreeSpeak II to its limits, and we had no issues at all,” Jason added. “With wireless, there’s always the typical hurdles based on the size and scope of the event, especially with two competing pre-game shows and the game itself. But we had lots of really good professionals willing to cooperate to make sure that everyone’s frequencies were safe and that everyone had what they needed. It was a pretty sweet week.”
“It is absolutely satisfying to know that our customers can so easily depend upon and use Clear-Com equipment for whatever job comes their way,” said Simon Browne, Vice President, Product Management, Clear-Com. “The ability to have a set plan for one event and easily modify it for another shows the power and flexibility of Clear-Com equipment in the hands of its users."
University of Southern Miss Super-Charges Stadium with All Danley Gear
Known locally as 'The Rock', M.M. Roberts Stadium is home to the University of Southern Mississippi’s Golden Eagles football team. It originally opened in 1932 with 4,000 seats and has since expanded to hold 36,000-plus rambunctious Southern Miss fans. Its most recent expansion happened a decade ago, and although the expanded infrastructure and seating is in great shape, the sound reinforcement system that went in didn’t fare as well. After an overhaul installed by AV integration firm Sound & Communications, of Flowood, Mississippi, M.M. Roberts Stadium now commands a full Danley Sound Labs loudspeaker, subwoofer, and amplifier/DSP system.
“The old system didn’t stand up to the elements, and pieces of the speaker cabinets and components were failing,” explained Jeff Crowe, director of operations with Sound & Communications. “The coverage was going, the high end was going, and intelligibility was going. I talked with some friends who attended home games last year, and they said it sounded like Charlie Brown’s teacher – laughably unintelligible!” Larry Lucas of Anthony James Partners worked with USM’s Senior Associate AD for External Operations, Stephen Pugh, to design a system with superlative intelligibility and musical impact. “We were aware of Danley's reputation in the industry and the commitment they have to quality and customer service,” Pugh said. “We spoke with past Danley clients and did some independent research, all of which convinced us that Danley's reputation was earned. We felt that we had found the right fit.”
The sound reinforcement system at M.M. Roberts Stadium fires from above the scoreboard on the north end of the field and uses Danley’s powerful Jericho Horns to cover the majority of the stands. One highly-focused Danley J6-42 Jericho Horn fires across the field to the opposite stands, and two broader Danley J3-64 Jericho Horns cover the stands to either side. Additional Danley SH46 and SH96HO full-range loudspeakers provide fill for the stands and coverage for the field itself. A pair of beefy, directional Danley BC415 subwoofers fill out the low end. Finally, five 4-channel Danley DNA 20k4 Pro amplifiers deliver 100,000 watts to the entire system and handle DSP for loudspeaker conditioning via custom presets for every Danley loudspeaker and subwoofer.
“When we walked to the 50-yard line and fired up the system for the first time, the hair on my neck actually stood up because it sounded so good,” Jeff recalled. “Everyone I’ve talked to since has been blown away. Everything is crystal clear and intelligible, and the low-end response really makes the music come to life. You can literally feel it!” Stephen is equally impressed. “The reaction from our fans and management has been overwhelming,” he said. “It has overhauled our game day experience, and the quality and service we received from Danley was fantastic. The new system is an absolute success.”
Jeff was impressed by the build quality of the Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers: “Compared with the old boxes that came out – you could almost push your thumb through their exteriors – the Danley boxes look ready to withstand the rain and heat through years and years of southern Mississippi summers. USM can look forward to great sound for a long time.”
Elite Multimedia Productions Takes the Field with the Nashville Knights
As part of the Los Angeles-based Legends Football League, the Nashville Knights are a 7-on-7, tackle football team that incorporated into the league in 2018. Playing their inaugural season in the Nashville Municipal Auditorium, the Knights wanted to offer an in-game experience that would create a lasting connection with their fans. Needing to supplement the production gear inside the multi-purpose event venue, the Knights worked with Elite Multimedia Productions who oversaw a complete game-day audio, video and lighting design.
“We try to design our in-game experience to be similar to what they do in the NFL to heighten the experience for our fans and provide a deeper connection to the action on the field,” said Candice Leisengang, Operations Manager. “When we started looking for production companies, we really needed someone who had the ability to do live audio, camera’s and video screens, plus we needed to implement an instant replay system. The Elite Multimedia team, led by Harry Shaub, was absolutely incredible and they really helped us walk through all the possibilities.”
As with many sporting events, video is an extremely important aspect in connecting the fans with the game. Knowing they wanted to implement an HD video system of their own, they worked with Elite Multimedia Productions to develop the ideal design for maximum viewing exposure in the arena.
“Our initial concept for the video portion of the production design was to have the screens hanging above the field, almost like a hockey rink,” added ToniAnn Santana. “As we started working with Elite Multimedia Productions, we decided to place the screens in the end zone so that everyone in the arena would be able to see the high-definition 4K video. Harry really took the time to educate us on the technical side, and it looked great.”
With the LED video displays in place, the remaining elements of the production design still needed to be brought into the action. Needing cameras, lighting and audio as well for the live, game-day atmosphere, a full production rig was created to complete and enhance the fiery environment inside the arena.
“When it came to the camera system, we needed the video to be able to work with the league cameras used for their broadcast, and also provide additional feeds for our live camera shot and the video playback for the instant replay,” explained Candice. “Additionally, the Nashville Municipal Auditorium has a pretty standard audio system, so we had to bring in supplemental gear to give us the sound quality we were looking for and provide PA for a live announcer. Since they didn’t have much for lighting either, outside of a few spotlights, Elite Multimedia Productions really brought in everything.”
In any live production environment, the preparation behind the event is often a key component to its success. With limited time to get each home game experience up and running, the Knights relied on the preparation of the team at Elite Multimedia Productions.
“As we needed to load-in all the equipment for each home game, this is where the value of our relationship with the team at Elite Multimedia really came into play,” admitted ToniAnn. “We typically load-in the day before the game and Harry was our go-to person from start-to-finish and it was seamless. We basically told him what our vision was, and then he worked with everyone on our team and with the league to make sure we were all getting what we needed for content and the fans.”
Now in place, the expanded production design for the inaugural season of the Nashville Knights was ready to light up the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. In this new, high-energy and fast-paced environment, the fans excitedly responded to creating both the experience and connection that the team desired.
“My favourite new aspect of the design was that we were able to go live, behind-the-scenes at halftime, and it was so intriguing for the fans to be able to see the coaches speaking to their teams,” added ToniAnn. “It really provided a deeper connection that gave our fans an inside look into how we are dedicated to playing the game of football.”
“The best thing about working with the team at Elite Multimedia Productions is that they stand behind you the whole way,” concluded Candice. “They were able to work within our budget while providing a high-quality production environment, and their knowledge and efficiency makes everything absolutely seamless. With all of the video, lighting and audio equipment they brought in, the experience of working with them was incredible.”
