Pliant Technologies CrewCom Hits a Home Run at MLB All-Star Game
CP Communications, a leading provider of live event production solutions, recently turned to Pliant Technologies’ CrewCom wireless intercom system to provide proven wireless communication for the recent MLB All-Star Game and surrounding live events, including the Home Run Derby and pre/post-game ceremonies. Providing RF coverage throughout the stadium as well as additional on-site production locations, Pliant’s CrewCom provided a dependable intercom solution for the weekend-long event.
It was of utmost importance for CP Communications to provide the MLB with an easy-to-use system that had virtually no end-user learning curve. “Something that has always stood out to me about Pliant’s CrewCom system is that it doesn’t require much effort on the user end. You can pick it up and it just works,” said Michael Mason, president of CP Communications. “CrewCom is lightweight, ergonomic, feels comfortable, and the battery lasts as long as I need it to. I couldn’t ask for more when it comes to a coms system.”
The coverage area needed for the MLB All-Star game was fairly large. With its Control Unit (CU) housed in the production truck located across the street, approximately 1000 feet from the house I/O, the system needed to span the distance to the stadium and then also cover several areas within the facility including in the bowl, in the hallways behind the dugouts, the production offices and the service hallway. CrewCom’s new Fiber Hub provided the perfect solution.
Using multiple CrewCom four-volume Radio Packs and ten Radio Transceivers (RTs), the MLB commissioner’s office was able to be assigned to their own production intercom channels while also having a direct line for communications to the television trucks – ESPN for the Home Run Derby and FOX for the All-Star Game. This setup allowed the MLB to seamlessly communicate with directors and producers in the network trucks to ensure a smooth production.
In regards to the system set up, CP Communications depends on the ease of deployment with CrewCom. Additionally, Mason finds CrewCom to be a solid option in the 900MHz spectrum range – helping to avoid overcrowded frequencies. For a given event, CP Communications can use up to 36 Radio Packs with two Control Units. The system can easily be expanded for additional users. Since CrewCom was first released, CP Communications has relied on the wireless intercom system for dozens of live productions, including multiple WWE events including WrestleMania, and the past two seasons of college football with The Big Ten Network, as well as the MLB All-Star Game for the past two years.
“Having the ability to connect the remote antennas directly off of the Fiber Hub increases the usability of the system. You can walk into a facility that is wired with single-mode fibre, grab strands and go – there is no need to run additional copper or fibre,” added Michael. “At CP Communications, we understand how crucial it is to implement reliable communications solutions for live events. We look for the right tool to fit the needs of the client, and Pliant’s CrewCom solves those needs.”
ESPN Uses Seven LIVEBOOK GFX Systems to Support Little League World Series
As ESPN ramps up their unprecedented coverage of the Little League World Series (LLWS) by broadcasting every game from the first round to the finals, the well-known sports media outlet is using seven LIVEBOOK GFX NDI systems from AJT Systems, a division of Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT), to provide the signature ESPN graphics and branding with an ultra-efficient workflow. Among ABC, ESPN and ESPN+, 200 LLWS baseball and softball games will be streamed to the masses.
“This LIVEBOOK GFX system enables us to broadcast more LLWS games than ever before thanks to its streamlined ESPN graphics package deployment, ease of use, portability – and all without sacrificing quality,” said Matt McCandlish, producer-director at ESPN.
AJT deployed the systems across the multiple LLWS event sites and provided their industry-leading live event remote support to ensure each production ran seamlessly. The company’s growing national network of LIVEBOOK GFX graphics operators are providing coverage for the geographically wide-spread event sites.
“We provide graphics systems for ESPN productions at every type of event from High School sports to Division I NCAA sports to national broadcasts; it’s a large part of what do,” said Ron Linares, manager of the AJT Systems division at Daktronics. “Stos Hall, coordinating producer at ESPN, came to us to supply systems for the LLWS as part of ESPN’s first effort to stream all rounds of the overall event. This posed several challenges such as tight timelines and diverse event locations. Now, with AJT Systems as part of Daktronics, we are able to scale up quickly to deliver for these types of events.”
With short deadlines, operator crews came up to speed on the system quickly and delivered on all ESPN branding and advanced production elements.
“We had a mix of highly-skilled veteran and first-time LIVEBOOK GFX operators, but by the second game, you couldn’t tell them apart,” noted Yanier Figueras, creative director at the AJT Systems division at Daktronics. “Having to also relocate some of the systems to multiple venues across the country, broadcasting around 90 games per week, it meant that the systems had to be ready to use within hours, sometimes within a few minutes, between matches. And this is where we excel. With a couple of clicks, the entire bug and insert graphics package transforms to support the new teams, roster and statistical information.”
“We were able to quickly deliver systems tailored to this event with the required graphics package, all preloaded and ready for use,” added Ron. “Working with Stos and his great team at ESPN was seamless. I think this really validates the production model we have championed now for several years. We are looking forward to bringing our efficient solution to more broadcasters as they look to produce more leading-edge content that was previously not possible due to the cost of production.”
The LIVEBOOK GFX provides ESPN unparalleled ease of use, compact form factor and powerful dual channels with the capability to produce an entire production’s graphics needs from a single platform.
ESPN is using the LIVEBOOK GFX for softball regionals at five locations: Northeast and MidAtlantic in Bristol, Connecticut; Southwest in Waco, Texas; Midwest and Great Lakes in Fishers, Indiana; West and Northwest in San Bern, California; and Southeast in Warner Robins, Georgia. They are also being used for Junior League Baseball in Taylor, Michigan; Junior League Softball in Kirkland, Washington; Intermediate League Baseball in Livermore, California; Senior League Baseball in Easley, South Carolina; and Senior League Softball in Sussex, Delaware.
For an up-close look at the LIVEBOOK GFX product, AJT Systems will be at IBC in Amsterdam at Booth A22 on Sept. 13-17, NADC in Maryland on Dec. 13-17, and the SVG Summit in New York on Dec. 16-17.
University of Georgia Expands Riedel Infrastructure
A longtime user of Riedel Communications’ Artist digital matrix intercom system, the University of Georgia Athletic Association (UGAA) has completed an expansion of its Artist-based communications infrastructure.
The system now fully integrates multiple sports venues across the campus to streamline linear broadcasts and live streaming of sports events, video board presentations, and in-venue fan promotions.
The University of Georgia is the flagship research university for the state of Georgia and one of the oldest public universities in the United States. As a Division 1 member of the Southeastern Conference of collegiate sports, the University of Georgia competes in 19 sports, and its teams have won over 40 national championships.
A new Artist 128 mainframe was installed in the central core that services Sanford Stadium and the Stegeman Coliseum and is linked via fiber to frames at the Foley Field baseball facility, the Jack Turner Stadium, the Turner Soccer Complex, the Gabrielsen Natatorium, and the William Porter Payne and Porter Otis Payne Indoor Athletic Facility. In addition, a Bolero wireless intercom system comprised of 15 beltpacks and seven antennas (some antennas are routinely moved to handle various other requirements) replaced a wired solution that was in place at several venues.
The new Bolero system integrates directly with Artist and enables all user groups, such as the band, cheer squad, DJ, operations team, and video control team, to communicate using a single system, without conversion or being on a party line. The solution has proven particularly valuable at the men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics events where multiple wireless channels have replaced an existing party line setup.
“When it came time to upgrade our comms capabilities across campus, we knew we wanted to stay with Riedel and Artist. And then the introduction of Bolero made it a no-brainer,” said Mike Bilbow, Assistant Athletic Director, Digital and Production, University of Georgia Athletic Association.
“Bolero gives us so much more flexibility, and its reliability and sound quality are bar-none – both critical factors for events with 90,000 cheering fans. With many of our users connecting wirelessly now, we’re able to save money on cabling infrastructure. And it’s great to be able to salvo presets for each event, which frees up our engineering staff for other duties.”
“We were proud to partner with Alpha Video for all of the wireless and wired intercom for UGAA’s broadcast infrastructure expansion,” said Dave Caulwell, Regional Sales Manager, Northeastern U.S. at Riedel North America.
“We value and celebrate the trust that the UGAA has put in Riedel Communications, making us the heart of their broadcast communications network.”

Electro-Voice Loudspeakers Solve Audio Challenges at Leicester City Football Club
The quality of presentations at Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium has been upgraded by the installation of a new Electro-Voice sound system.
The big task for Birmingham-based installer DMX Productions was to achieve uniform coverage of the challenging shape of Walkers Hall, which is used for presentations and conferences. The clear solution was Electro-Voice’s EVC-1122-VI loudspeaker with its unique variable-intensity configuration that evenly covers a clearly defined rectangular area.
“The variable-intensity technology gave us exactly the right amount of gain shading to cope with the change in room height, and the uniform coverage that we set out to achieve,” DMX Productions’ SJ Grevett explained.
Eight white EVC-1122-VI cabinets form the main solution, mounted near the ceiling of the 3.9m-high void space. These are supplemented by 16 Electro-Voice EVID 6.2 wall-mounted loudspeakers. The high loudspeaker count further contributes to even coverage at moderate sound levels, yet ensures plenty of headroom when needed.
“SPL measurements confirmed that coverage is really even, with only 2 to 3 dB difference in level anywhere in the room,” Grevett stated. “In every room configuration – end-on, or with stage either at right or left such as for the players’ awards – a presenter can roam with a radio mic, even directly underneath a loudspeaker, and there’s no risk of feedback.”
LCFC technical manager Tom Brown agreed: “I’m really pleased with the way the EVs cover the whole of the Walker Hall, it’s totally seamless no matter where you are in the room, and the speakers look and sound great!”
A further two spaces – a bar area and a conference room – are fitted with ZX1i loudspeakers in white, while a set of EVOLVE 50 portable column speaker systems is always available for special events requiring extra-high SPL and extended bass.
“I’m very happy,” concluded Grevett. “The acid test for us is when the visiting engineer prefers to use the house system to get a better result – that speaks volumes!”
Danley Speakers, Subs and Amps Excite the Crowds at Winnemucca Events Centre
Sitting near the bustling crossroads of I-80 and US-95, the Winnemucca Events Centre in North-Central Nevada is the area’s most popular setting for car shows, wrestling matches, archery challenges, rodeos, high school graduations, and more. Its indoor events centre can accommodate up to 5,000 with the retractable bleacher in place, plus seating on the temporary floor. The flexible surface can accommodate the dirty romance of a rodeo, the proper pomp of a graduation ceremony, or anything in-between. Until recently, however, it had an unreliable, low-intelligibility sound reinforcement system. AV integration firm Focus Partners of West Richland, Washington (with offices also in Boise and Nashville), designed and installed a state-of-the-art Danley Sound Labs system that’s capable of highly-intelligible spoken word and compelling musical reproduction.
“The previous system was original to the Winnemucca indoor event space, making it close to twenty years old,” explained Joel Moak, systems consultant with Focus Partners. “Several components were simply broken, and the rest were full of dirt. For most events, the operators brought in a portable sound system, but it always elicited complaints. In 2017, I met with Kim Peterson, director of the Winnemucca Convention & Visitors Authority. He didn’t want a new sound system that would be merely passable, he wanted a legacy sound system that would be the envy of every comparable facility in the state of Nevada!”
Joel continued: “I’ve done side-by-side comparisons between every possible pro-level sound reinforcement system out there, and nothing compares with the fidelity and output of Danley’s patented designs. Those qualities are especially astounding given Danley’s generally smaller footprint, which was important in this situation. I arranged a demo involving a Danley SH96HO full-range, high-output loudspeaker and two Danley TH118 subwoofers, and Kim was appropriately thrilled with their clarity and impact.” To finalize the design, Moak turned to Danley’s powerful (but free) Doug Jones-designed acoustics modelling software – Danley Direct. He concluded that a centre cluster would provide the best coverage and flexibility to accommodate the centre’s myriad event types.
Four Danley SH96 full-range loudspeakers cover each cardinal direction from the centre of the arena. A pair of beefy Danley TH118 subwoofers round out the low end for a complete, hi-fi sound, and a single Danley OS80 loudspeakers fire straight down from the centre to cover the floor. Where support beams create shadows from the main cluster and for two upper balcony sections at the ends of the arena, Joel deployed additional Danley OS80s with appropriate delays to match the arrival time from the main cluster. In addition, four delayed, down-firing Danley OS12CX loudspeakers cover the lobby, and two pairs of two Danley OS80s each cover the outside of the building. Finally, an outdoor staging area, most commonly used by cowboys preparing for rodeo events, is covered by a Danley OS12CX.
Two Danley DNA 20k4 Pro amplifiers deliver 5,000 watts each to eight channels, and two Danley DNA 5k4c amplifiers deliver 1,250 watts each to eight channels. “In addition to providing abundant, clean power, plenty of loudspeaker and circuitry protection, and custom DSP presets for every Danley model, the DNA amplifiers give us the ability to log into the rack computer,” Joel said. “We use Danley System Engineer to check the status of each amp.” Focus Partners gave the Winnemucca Indoor Events Center complete, yet intuitive control of the system with a Q-Sys Core 110f. Joel continued: “A non-skilled operator can simply select the event type and coverage needs, and the system takes care of itself. They can control which speakers are on or off to deliver coverage where it is needed and to avoid energizing areas where it isn’t needed.” An Allen & Heath QU16 digital console serves as the main interface for more skilled operators during more complex events.
“Kim and everyone else on the team are thrilled with the sound quality,” Joel concluded. “The technical director of the area high school sports network told me that he regularly works every facility in the county, and Winnemucca’s system is by far and away the best he has ever heard.”
Hog Consoles Guide European Games’ Ceremonies in Belarus
Thousands of lighting fixtures and LED devices supported the “Bright Year, Bright You” theme of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2019 Second European Games earlier this summer. Dinamo National Stadium in Minsk, Belarus was aglow with the glittering pageantry, and a network of High End Systems Hog lighting consoles controlled it all.
The main lighting control system was comprised of two Hog 4-18 flagship consoles plus two Full Boar 4 consoles, all networked in a multi-programmer setup, outputting data via 5 DMX Processor 8000 units. A near-identical backup system was also on standby.
The physical set featured eight stages. In addition to the more than 1,000 moving head fixtures, Hog consoles controlled all the LED pieces, including the set decorations, the interactive audience bracelets and pixel tubes. Because of the massive amount of pixel mapping required, Hog connected with the Madrix LED control as the interface to trigger the LED devices.
The ceremonies captivated the crowds and worldwide broadcast audience with the story of Belarus – from folklore to the future. Lighting Designer Evgeniy Toma of the Sechenov agency and Russian company Art City 5 were in charge of the production, whose planning spanned more than a year.
For this large-scale stadium event, the LD insisted on using the Hog line of consoles. As a longtime Hog user, Evgeniy wanted a flexible, powerful and reliable control system plus the speed of programming he counts on for this complex show.
Russian distributor SiM, together with ETC’s local service engineers and the HES Hog experts in Austin, Texas supported to have everything up and running smoothly.
“Everything worked fine!” Evgeniy said about the massive networking setup. One of his favourite Hog features is working with timecode, which was necessary for this event. “Everything on the Hog console is very accessible, it’s easy to make quick changes and there is a flexibility of working with various macros.”
He enjoyed using the new Hog 4-18 with its larger 18-inch screens and extra arms for monitors and other devices. “The screens are perfect and so pleasant to the touch,” he noted. “It makes me think of the AC/DC song, ‘Touch Too much.’ I want to touch this screen more often! And extra arms are something that has long been missing. We certainly used them.”
Evgeniy’s assistants were Anton Voronin (Hog 4 programmer), Aleksey Bogomolov and Anton Polyakov. Engineers were Aleksey Pavlenko (who took care of Hog 4 networking and systems integration) and Dmitriy Gurev.
This same production team reunites in August - using the same Hog set up - for the World Skills Competition 2019 Opening Ceremony in Kazan, Russia.
Daktronics Installs Ribbon Display for Miami Dolphins
Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT) of Brookings, South Dakota, partnered with the Miami Dolphins to design, manufacture and install the longest continuous LED ribbon display in professional sports measuring 2,105 feet long for Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Installed this spring, the 360-degree ribbon will integrate with the existing Daktronics LED video displays in the four corners of the stadium, two ribbon displays and the exterior video board marquee to create an entertainment destination for their fans. Adding to the excitement of the new ribbon display, Hard Rock Stadium will host the biggest football game of the season February 2, 2020, as well as the college football championship in 2021.
The new ribbon display measures 3.5 feet high by 2,105 feet wide as it wraps around the entire seating fascia of the facility.
“This new ribbon display completes the fan experience in the seating bowl at Hard Rock Stadium by surrounding fans in LED lights to immerse them in the game-day action,” said Kyle Adams, Daktronics regional sales manager. “We’re thrilled to extend our long-term partnership with the Miami Dolphins with this installation as we continually help them to provide their fans with the best experience at their live events. We look forward to the success of this installation and our partnership for years to come.”
Daktronics history with the Miami Dolphins dates back to 1993 and includes the first High-Definition LED video display installed in sports in 2006.
Daktronics has grown with the sports industry from the company’s beginnings in 1968. Today, the company has integrated LED super systems in nearly 60 percent of all professional sports facilities in the United States.
Danley OS Speakers & Subs Handle Passaic Co. Tech Institute Stadium
Passaic County Technical Institute is a large vocational, public high school that serves over 3,300 students in northern New Jersey. Its sizable campus is well-appointed, and its programs are well-supported. Two full-time professional sound technicians number among its staff and oversee operations in its performing arts department and at its sporting events. Until recently, however, the PCTI Bulldogs football team played for 1,500-plus crowds using only a portable sound reinforcement system that was underpowered and frequently unintelligible. JD Sound and Video of Voorhees, New Jersey, remedied that for the Bulldogs’ most recent season with the installation of highly-efficient, big SPL, but small-footprint, Danley OS80 loudspeakers and OS115 subwoofers. Because they’re designed and built to be fully weatherized, the Danley OS-Series boxes will serve PCTI for a long, long time.
“The Passaic football stadium had the best of everything for a school its size: new lighting, new turf, a new climate-controlled press box, nice seating, and full concessions,” said Joe DiSabatino, president and lead design engineer at JD Sound and Video. “Everything except a great sound reinforcement system. They were limping along with an underpowered portable system for every game. But they had high expectations. Given everything else audio-related at the school and the two full-time, A1 sound techs on staff, Passaic was a critical audience. This was more than the usual ‘make the athletic director and the students happy’ situation.”
Despite the high expectations, there were major constraints on what JD Sound and Video could do. Given the large size of the home stands, most designers would have flanked the main system with a delay on a pole near each twenty-yard line. But at PCTI, that would have involved breaking up concrete to trench the cabling. It would have necessitated the removal of a fence to get an outdoor lift in place. In short, it would have been cost-prohibitive. “So, we couldn’t use flanking poles, but they wanted the same kind of performance as if we had,” Joe laughed. “Moreover, the roof of the press box is used by videographers and assistant coaches. So, we could only use the press box and we had to cover everything, but we couldn’t take up much real estate.”
He continued: “We needed small boxes with a lot of throw and very high SPLs. Danley is well-known for meeting those requirements. Chris Hutnick [Lienau AV Associates] is our area Danley rep, and he’s great. He did a little demo in our shop to prove the concept. I had also heard the Danley technology at InfoComm. The Danley footprint versus output is unmatched. If we had gone with any other manufacturer, it would have required so much more. On top of all that, the Danley OS-Series is designed from the ground up to live outside. It’s a pretty perfect combination of features.”
The final design uses three Danley OS80 Synergy Horn loudspeakers to cover the left, centre, and right portions of the stands (there is no visitor side seating). The centre OS80 is offset on the press box to allow a clear line of sight. Two Danley OS115 Tapped Horn subwoofers near the left and right OS80s provide low-frequency reinforcement – an additional octave to an octave and a half. Finally, two weatherized Danley GO2 8CX loudspeakers add fill just in front of the press box for the seats missed by the OS80s. QSC amplifiers and QSC Q-Sys control/DSP complete the system.
“The Danley boxes installed a lot easier than the other manufacturers we’re used to,” Joe said. “Bolting a fifty-pound OS80 up on a 26-foot extension ladder was a much less daunting task compared to a box with comparable output from a competitor’s product. They were also small enough to fit through the press box hatch, which was nice too. They’re tight to the frame of the press box and don’t take up any space needed by the people who work up there during games. We had the Danley boxes custom powder-coated, and they look really clean. Even apart from the great Danley performance, the ease of installation will make Danley our go-to solution for similar jobs in the future.”
The first Friday night game of the season saw 2,500 Passaic fans cram into the stands and around the field, and everyone thrilled to hear the improvement in sound quality over the previous seasons’ portable system. The Danley OS80s easily overcame crowd noise with clear, intelligible announcements and no distortion. “And the music sounds really good through the system, too,” Joe said. “That’s a downfall of a lot of other manufacturers’ boxes. They might sound okay with voice, but the music sounds like it’s playing through a tin can.” JD Sound and Video also provided a jack at field level so that the team can practice to whatever music they want.
